Here Today

Last week I had the opportunity of a lifetime: to see Paul McCartney in concert. If you know me at all, you know I am an absolute Beatles fanatic. Even if you don't know me, you have probably gotten the hint.
That being said, you can imagine what an experience this was for me. For half of the show, I stood in a stupor, unable to comprehend that 1/4 of my favorite human beings was standing right there, making jokes and telling us stories.
I finally managed to compose myself after the first few numbers; Then lights dimmed and Paul took the stage alone with an acoustic guitar. Yeah, so much for that composure.
We were serenaded with "Blackbird," and all was quiet for a moment. Paul murmured into the microphone,

"We often wait until it's too late to tell people we love how we truly feel. Then, all we can do is wish we had that moment back. Just to make sure they know."

By then, I knew what was coming.

Paul wrote "Here Today" in 1982, following the murder of John Lennon in 1980. I truly believe it is the most beautiful, honest, and haunting song he has ever composed. Seeing Paul perform it was the most moving experience of my life.

Even my dad cried.

Love,
Katie F.
