A Cold War Interview with My Grandfather

An assignment given in my Advanced Placement European History course was to interview a family member about the Cold War. I chose my grandfather, one of my favorite family members, to question about this crisis. Here are some quotes from the interview, please enjoy:

"Karl Marx? Don’t know him. Don’t know what the Communist Manifesto is, it’s probably their constitution."

"Communism is dedicated to the overthrow government. I think that capitalism is what keeps us going. Socialism doesn’t exist in America."

"Russian Americans made me uneasy, they had two strikes against them with me."

"One of the reasons I voted for John F. Kennedy was because I thought he would settle the Cold War. He wasn’t a war hawk and he was smart, very smart probably because he was a Catholic."

"At the time I thought propaganda was the truth, now looking back I still believe it."

This is why I love my grandfather more than any other being on my planet, except for maybe my grandmother and Katie F.
